Katie’s Story: Stay-At-Home Boss Babe
Hi, Katie! Tell me a little about yourself.
Hi, I’m Katie! I am a wife, mom of two adorable little boys, and a business owner living in Southern California.
What is your side hustle?
I run a business called With Love From Katie where I hammer out beautifully custom bar necklaces and bracelets.
With Love From Katie was inspired by my lifestyle. Being a loving mom/wife and a rugged horse owner, I wanted something that could compliment both. The fact that I can easily throw on a bar necklace with whatever I’d like it to say just fits perfectly. I could dress it up for date nights with my husband or dress it down with a pair of jeans and a flannel and still feel trendy with my own spin on things.
How did you get started with this side hustle?
After walking away from a successful job in banking to allow my husband to go after his career with full force, I found myself wanting more. Not wanting to disrupt our daily life and still being fully supportive of my husband’s crazy work schedule, I sat down and thought about what I could do to fulfill the void I felt. I wanted to give myself the satisfaction of contributing to my family’s overall well-being while continuing to stay at home full-time with my two little ones. After realizing I had a serious addiction to bar necklaces and was dumping all kinds of money into replacing and wanting more of them, I decided to try and teach myself and make my own.
Do you have any formal training for your side hustle?
No, not at all! After talking to my hubby and convincing him that I could do it (he was hesitant) I made a small investment in my first set of metal stamps, metal blanks and the most important tool, my hammer. I began to teach myself how to perfect the job by watching Youtube videos! Just when I thought I should just give up and confess to my hubby I just flushed a couple hundred dollars down the drain, it clicked! I was hooked!

Did you start your side hustle for any specific reason?
When I left my job in banking our whole life changed. We sold our big house and bought one half the size. We traded in our cars and drove more humble ones, watched our spending more than we ever have, and just had to be patient until we could recoup the income that I had just walked away from.
I was home with my kids for a solid 3 years as a stay-at-home-mom before we realized I wouldn’t be going back to work at a corporate job. It wasn’t until after those 3 years that I realized I was going to be my own boss. Being able to take my kids to school, attend school functions, there when they are sick, and everything in between, was so important to me. I was going to do anything to be able to continue staying home with them.
How many hours per week do you put into WLFK?
When you decide to start your own business, you have to be all in or you WILL fail. I started almost a year ago and I haven’t stopped. There are weeks where I put in a solid 8+ hours a day (broken up of course) and still not even close to being finished. I have to force myself to shut down and walk away.
I have been very blessed to land some pretty cool opportunities so fast which has kept me extremely busy throughout my first year in business. Within my first month of this whole new venture, I was approached by two really neat companies. One is a local business here where I in Southern California. They had come across my account on Instagram and loved my stuff. The owner offered me a space in her store to display my products right in her boutique. A year later, I’m still there and business has been great!
Another mind-blowing opportunity was when I was contacted by a subscription box company and offered a spot in their monthly subscription boxes to brides all over the world! I was presented with the chance to have my handmaid pieces exposed to thousands of people! I have now done 2 rounds with this company and have been in over 7,000 boxes to date. This, of course, sparked a lot of business and interest with other box companies. I am really looking forward to 2018!
How much do you make from your side hustle per month?
Last year I can proudly say that I grossed almost $60k in just my first year! There were some months I was bringing in $5-$6k per month and others where I brought home only $2-$3k. Like I mentioned before, I have been super blessed to have landed some amazing opportunities so quickly. I also have such devoted customers who have ordered from me multiple times. I am only hoping to be able to keep up with the opportunities that have kept me going and have been the biggest chunk of my income.
What do you love most about what you do?
This is actually a hard question for me. As a whole, I am honestly so passionate about what I do. I love that I get to do something different on every piece of jewelry I create. I love that I get to meet new people from all over the world every day and bring comfort and joy to people out there going through all kinds of experiences. Who would have thought, right? I could go on and on.
What is the biggest struggle you face with WLFK?
My biggest struggle to date has been a work-life balance. I can honestly say, although I had big goals for WLFK, I did not expect it to come so fast! I found myself trying to still “do it all”! Everything that is expected of a stay at home mom/wife and now run a corporation with lots of demand and strict timelines.
I’m still not exactly sure what that perfect balance is, but I am starting to not put so much pressure on myself. I’m reminding myself that this is MY business and I have the power to take control. I have written myself a schedule, just like any other job, and make sure I am setting myself working hours. Whatever I don’t get done in that amount of time, I just have to tell myself that it can wait until tomorrow. That is VERY difficult for me considering I am the type of person that has a hard time stepping away once a project is started.
What is your best advice for someone wanting to start their own side hustle?
Get out there and do it! You will never know if you don’t try. If you get in your head that you won’t make it, you won’t. You have to tell yourself every day that you will make it. If you remain positive and are willing to learn and work hard, in the end, it will all pay off. Fake it until you make it.
Put in the hard work and know when to rest. I have learned so much this past year and I am continuing to learn more about business and about myself. At the end of the day, taking this HUGE step for me and my family has truly made a difference in our quality of life. My husband no longer needs to put in for voluntary overtime at work and is able to be home a lot more. We haven’t had to even think about dipping into our savings account either! Its a really great feeling. I am always here to help those along the way and share everything I have learned so far!
How amazing is Katie’s story, friend? Not only is she making a kick-ass income from her side hustle, but she gets to do what she loves EVERY SINGLE DAY alongside staying home with her two kiddos! I absolutely love Katie’s advice for getting started: “You will never know if you don’t try.”
